Geriatric Rehabilitation

Old age is just like returning back to our childhood gradually in the reverse order. Our runs become walks, our walk becomes short irregular steps, and then we may need a support to walk, gradually bed becomes our routine place of stay…….all the freedom we enjoyed in our life becomes restricted due to limitations of our aged body. Our greying generation definitely requires a rehabilitation protocol to live better and bring a positive vibe to their dwindling life. We offer service to ease problems due to your old age and bring calmness to your mind.

Old age is a gradual physiological change period in our life, where we become functionally less productive in all aspects. Aging is a natural condition where the wear and tear process is at a faster pace than repair. All organ systems degrade and their functions are compromised. Managing this physiological state in such a way that whatever residual functions are left, can be enhanced and functional capability can be increased, is the aim of geriatric rehabilitation. As we age, we become affected with multi system disorders. Common conditions seen in the old age are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, dementia, hemiplegia, arthritis, cardiac problems, urinary incontinence, visual disorders, auditory difficulties, walking difficulties, decreased vital capacity and pulmonary function, etc. Physiologically there will be a decline in muscle mass as well as muscle strength; increase in fat deposition and reduction in bone mineral density. All these brings gait changes like slow walking, shorter steps and sometimes even walking aids maybe required. Even though all these are physiological, our aim is to retain and restore functional ability to the maximum. Moreover, medications for each system disorders will become a burden to the person and hence the number of medications should be minimized. Another aspect is that each associated condition mentioned above may require hospitalization, and it may be quite uncomfortable for the aged. So reducing the hospital stay and returning back home earlier, will be possible only if the aged is trained enough to cope up on his own which can be attained through rehabilitation. Old age is also a time where we are more susceptible to injuries due to falls. Healing process is also delayed in case of injuries in old age and hence requires greater care in management. At the end, rehabilitation becomes inevitable to restore functions as it was before the incident of fall. Rehabilitating old age often requires a number of external aids like hearing aids, suitable walking aids, supportive shoes and calipers, etc. Training to use them and making life easier and smoother is a major part in rehabilitating the old.
